EVE Online news from PAX
September 4, 2010
Massively has the early reports on CCP's plans for EVE's winter expansion pack. The news thus far is pretty tame.
The as-yet unnamed expansion includes minor changes to the planetary interaction which was introduced in Tyrannis. These tweaks will attempt to encourage players to be more active in their management of planetary resources, rewarding those who check on their planetary assets regularly. They will also make some changes to the way planetary interaction is controlled, in an effort to make the gameplay more accessible and entertaining.
The most exciting aspect of the expansion is sure to be incursions. Incursions will be designed to boost EVE's PvE experience, which is widely criticized. These encounters will be balanced to take a week or more to defeat. After the defeat of the encounter's mothership, all players who were involved at any point during the incursion will receive loyalty points and ISK. Blueprints to the mothership will also be distributed.
EVE Online's social network, "EVE Gate," will also see improvements in the winter expansion. In addition to some changes in its functionality, there will be a live in-game broadcast available from the web, and in-game forums.
The new expansion will also include changes to EVE's Character Creation system. These changes will more-accurately reflect the character art which will be used for the eventual "walking in stations" update.
Altogether, this expansion is looking like it'll be a positive one for players overall, especially for those who prefer PvE and social aspects in their games. But don't expect it to be called the Care Bear expansion, EVE will continue to live up to its image of being hard-edged world for the hardcore sandbox player.
Pirates of the Burning Servers
Sony Online Entertainment has announced that they will be shutting down three of their servers for Pirates of the Burning Sea. As of March 5, 2010 the Blackbeard, Defiant, and Rackham servers will be closing. Because of this, SOE is offering free character transfers starting February 5, 2010, allowing you to transfer to the two remaining servers, Antigua or Roberts.
SOE is being somewhat more kind with their character transfer action in PotBS than they were when they closed twelve of the SWG servers a few months ago. This time they are offering account reactivation to people who aren't currently subscribed to Pirates, in order to allow them to rescue their characters from the servers that are getting the ax in this process.
The following is quoted from SOE's official announcement.
Important Information Regarding Pirates of the Burning Sea™ Account
Ahoy, Pirates of the Burning Sea Captains!
Population density has been the topic of much debate in the community over the last few months. What we're hearing is that Pirates is an awesome game that you really enjoy playing, but that it's a lot more fun when there's a critical mass of other players around to play alongside or against. Through feedback from the players and evaluation of server populations, it has become clear that key game features require higher density in order to function at optimum levels.
To push things in the right direction, we've decided to condense the current population onto two servers. On March 5, 2010 at approximately 12:01 AM PST, we will close the following servers: Blackbeard, Defiant, and Rackham. Beginning on February 5, 2010 at approximately 12:01 AM PST, you can transfer your characters from the affected servers onto one of the two remaining servers, Antigua or Roberts. At this time, character creation will be disabled on the Blackbeard, Defiant, and Rackham servers. We hope these changes will provide you with an even more enjoyable Pirates experience.
Important Dates
* 2/2/2010 05:00AM Patch 1.22 Goes live
* 2/5/2010 12:01AM Character transfers open.
* 3/5/2010 12:01AM Blackbeard, Defiant and Rackham servers are closed.
When can I start transferring my characters?
* You can transfer your characters beginning at approximately 12:01 AM PST on February 5, 2010 using our character transfer service at: http://www.burningsea.com/pages/transfer/.
What if my Pirates of the Burning Sea subscription isn't currently active?
* Between February 5, 2010 at 12:01 AM PST and March 5, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST, accounts of former players that were closed between January 22, 2008 and January 15, 2010 will be reactivated for up to twenty-nine (29) days of free play*, which will allow you to transfer your characters to the Roberts or Antigua server and try out new features that we have implemented since you last set sail.

SWG Server Shutdowns
It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. It was officially (and inevitably) announced today that Star Wars Galaxies will be closing 12 of its servers on October 15, 2009. SOE officials are quick to note that this is not a precursor to the game itself shutting down, but merely to keep the server resources manageable. Despite what they say however, over the past year or so, SWG has been transitioning to the mid-late lifestage of an MMO; maintenance mode, in which bugs are squashed, systems are put into place to allow players to entertain themselves without development input, and "final" class balances are made. After these changes have been completed to the satisfaction of the company, the dev team will be further reduced or eliminated and their tasks given to a team that works on maintaining multiple games. Server consolidations are part of this process.
What is most disturbing to me is the official announcement's claim that "any characters and their associated items and structures remaining on the identified servers being closed will no longer be accessible on your Star Wars Galaxies or Station Access account." This suggests that consolidation is not on SOE's mind, but instead they may delete characters that are not transferred on time. Reading further they say, "Beginning October 16th, 2009 at 12:01 AM PT you will be able to contact Customer Support and for the standard Character Transfer fee of $50.00 you will be able to schedule a transfer for your character, eligible structures and inventory. " So supposedly you will be able to retrieve your character from the dead servers for a period of time with the $50 transfer fee, but no guarantees how long that service will last.
Affected servers are:
- West US
- Corbantis
- Intrepid
- Kettemoor
- Naritus
- Scylla
- Valcyn
- East US
- Kauri
- Lowca
- Tarquinas
- Tempest
- Wanderhome
- European
- Infinity
This leaves 13 servers running, 11 US and 2 European. I suspect that after this drawing down of the server numbers, we'll see a relatively active period of development as SOE finishes preparations for the maintenance stage. After that, I expect things will quiet down until population numbers drop to the point where further consolidation is necessary, at which time we'll probably see another free voluntary character transfer.

STAR WARS GALAXIES™ SERVER CLOSURE F.A.Q.
Which servers will be closing?
The following 12 servers will be closing on Thursday, October 15 2009:
- Corbantis
- Europe-Infinity
- Intrepid
- Kauri
- Kettemoor
- Lowca
- Naritus
- Scylla
- Tarquinas
- Tempest
- Valcyn
- Wanderhome
When will these 12 servers be closed?
These servers will be closing on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at 4:40 PM Pacific Time.
Why are you closing these 12 Star Wars Galaxies Servers?
The Free Character Transfer Service launched earlier this year with the intention of allowing players to transfer to servers with more active communities, creating a more vibrant and memorable Star Wars Galaxies gaming experience. The Free Character Transfer Service was a phenomenal success, leaving the less active servers in an undesirable position. In order to help streamline the current and new user experience, we have made the decision to close the less active servers and focus on the thriving Star Wars Galaxies servers.
Can I move my characters off of these servers?
Yes, you can move any character from the 12 identified servers up until Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 4:59 PM PT. Please see http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/freects/ for terms and conditions.
Will I be charged to move my characters from these servers?
No. If you take advantage of the Free Character Transfer Service before Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 5:00 PM PT, you will not be charged to transfer your characters to one of the 13 destination servers including:
- Ahazi
- Bloodfin
- Bria
- Chilastra
- Eclipse
- Europe-Chimaera
- Europe-FarStar
- Flurry
- Gorath
- Radiant
- Shadowfire
- Starsider
- Sunrunner
Where can I find out more information on the Free Character Transfer Service?
http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/freects/
What if my account is inactive/closed but I want to move my characters off of these servers?
You must reactivate your account by visiting the www.station.sony.com and entering a valid credit card or Game Time card. Once your account is active, paid, and in good standing you will be able to transfer your character using the Free Character Transfer Service through October 15, 2009.
What happens if I am not able to transfer my characters from these servers before October 15th 2009, can I move my characters after October 15th 2009?
Beginning October 16th, 2009 at 12:01 AM PT you will be able to contact Customer Support and for the standard Character Transfer fee of $50.00 you will be able to schedule a transfer for your character, eligible structures and inventory.
Please be aware that the Character Transfer Service from closed servers does not guarantee that all inventory items will be transferred. Due to the unique nature of moving a character from a closed server, the Character Transfer Service may take additional time to process.
For more information on the Character Transfer Service visit: https://store.station.sony.com/cts/...ertransfers.jsp
What if I don’t want to change servers?
Unfortunately, if you’re on a server that’s slated to be closed you will have to make the move in order to continue playing Star Wars Galaxies.
I like playing the game by myself and don’t care how many players are on my particular server at a given time. Can you just leave me be and let me keep playing?
Sorry, but in an effort to improve the gameplay experience for everyone, all characters on the identified servers must be moved. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the Free Character Transfer Service before October 15, 2009 so that you can move your character at no charge.
Does this mean you’re shutting down Galaxies?
No, not at all. We have lots of new content and updates planned for Galaxies and remain committed to making the game an enjoyable and engrossing experience. The server closure is an effort to improve the gameplay experience for all of our players.
Champions and Spellborn News
A bit late on the updating for this one (probably because I've been too busy playing). But Champions Online is now in Open Beta. "Open" can be loosely translated into "if you pay someone some money", you can either gain entrance into open beta by pre-ordering the game, or by subscribing to file planet. Either way It's pretty worth it. The game is still a bit rocky right now as they iron out the kinks before launch, but boy is it fun! They've got a strong foundation, with a good round of bug-bashing and some optimization and polish, Champions stands to draw in a lot of people. Catch me ingame as EmeraldTitan@EmeraldTitan.
So I received an email this morning from Acclaim, apparently The Chronicles of Spellborn is about to undergo a major revamp. Spellborn is an "action" RPG mmo, allowing the user to customize their gear from level 1. To be honest, it's a pretty fun game, I'm interested to see where they'll be taking it.
In the meantime, the game has become feature frozen, meaning no patches or updates, and Free to Play for the time it takes them to develop their revamp. As I understand it, the game will also remain free to play after the revamp. So if you're looking for a fun, action oriented free rpg on the cheap, check out The Chronicles of Spellborn
The Wagon, And My Relationship With It
I'm not sure whether this is me falling off the wagon, or climbing back on. But I think I'm going to be re-subbing to EQ2 at least for a month, I've been thinking about it a bit recently, I do miss the exploration and fun quests. I don't miss the repetitive looking gear (though I hear they've added more and the appearance slots help). So we'll see where it goes. I think my stint in CoH is over, I probably won't delve into superheroes again until Champions Online releases in September.
Speaking of Champions Online. If you're local to the Spokane, Washington area (or in close proximity) be sure to attend this year's SpoCon! Steve Long of Hero Games is the Gaming Guest this year, He'll hopefully be talking a lot about Champions and Champions Online... also I heard rumors of beta keys appearing for those in attendance, I can't confirm that, take it at face value ;)
All Good Things Must End.... (Matrix Online shuts down)
As you have recently read in Dan “Walrus” Myers producer letter All Good Things Must End, The Matrix Online service will be discontinued and the servers will go dark on July 31st. After 4 memorable years of sharing amazing stories and epic adventures with a wonderful and dedicated community, we saw how deep the rabbit hole went and it was time to write the final chapter of the story. We understand that there are many questions and will do our best to answer them here.
What happens to all the code/data for The Matrix Online?
Sony Online Entertainment and Warner Brothers will retain all of the code and data from The Matrix Online.
Can someone open an emulated server for The Matrix Online?
Sony Online Entertainment and Warner Brothers hold the copyrights for The Matrix Online stories and data so creating a fan owned and operated emulated MxO server would be against those copyrights.
What happens to the staff that made The Matrix Online?
Staff that were involved with The Matrix Online will transition over to new projects and responsibilities at SOE.
How are The Matrix Online subscriptions refunded? / I just re-subscribed, how will I get a refund?
As of June 1, 2009 any currently entitled active player with an account in billing will not be billed again. For players who have previously purchased prepaid subscription time via a multi-month subscription service, SOE game time card or other retail game time card that extends the service period past June 1, 2009, SOE will refund these accounts for the unused time and where indicated will mail refund checks to the current billing address on the account. Please be sure to update your email and physical address in your Station Account as this will be critical to the refund process.
Are The Matrix Online subscribers going to be compensated for their loyalty to the game?
On July 31, 2009 at 11:59PM PST the ability to play The Matrix Online will cease. We encourage players to transition their active service to one of the other SOE games available for trial during the transition period of June 1 through August 1, 2009.
Will The Matrix Online be at Fan Faire?
While there won’t be any official panels at Fan Faire 2009, there will be many Sony Online Entertainment staff members that have worked on or supported The Matrix Online who would enjoy hearing your favorite in-game memories from your adventures in Mega City.
Will The Matrix Online story come to a conclusion when the servers are shut down?
The final days of The Matrix Online will include revisiting some of the great events experienced in-game, leading up to a climactic final event.
Will the MxO Website, Players Pages, and Forums be available after the service shuts down?
The main The Matrix Online page will not be available after June 1, 2009 and the MxO Players Pages will be available through July 31, 2009. The MxO Forums will be available for a short period of time after the service shuts down and there will be an update posted there at that time as to how long they will be available.

It's Crime Time! CrimeCraft Enters Beta
Crime Craft is a game that I learned about just recently, billed as an Online Persistent Shooter, it's played in third person perspective and based around a crumbled society now run by rival Gangs. The game focuses on the shooter element as well as customization and player-crafting. The game is designed to have "city" zones that are free of conflict mainly for socializing and mission gathering. The shooter elements take place in instanced maps where teams and gangs struggle to control territory. Sign up for the Closed Beta now, it starts tomorrow!
Steam & SOE Team Up
Who has the coin to shell out to try new MMO's all the time? I know I don't. And free trials seem to be few and far between. Cool thing is, older games come down in price, and now the prices are even lower, thanks to SOE and Steam partnering up to offer SOE's lineup of MMOs through Steam.
$14.99 games:
Vanguard Saga of Heroes
Pirates of the Burning Sea
Everquest II Rise of Kunark Starter Pack
Everquest Secrets of Faydwer
$39.99 games:
Everquest II The Shadow Odyssey
Everquest Seeds of Destruction All-in-one Compilation Pack
The sale ends on January 26, 2009 so if you're interested in trying any of these and getting your free month for purchasing the game now is the time to do it.
First Hi-res Walking In Stations Screenshots
Ugh... This has never happened to me before... I swear.
So, I was on a roll with site updates, and then my crappy computer crapped out on me, well, the HD Controller Board did, so I can't access any of my working files, so I'm going to press on as much as I can't until I can access those files again :( I can get the review system online in a rudimentary form for the time being, until I can get my graphics back. Luckily, I can still work on site basics, like taxonomy and getting pages setup to list content by game, etc... Stan and I will also hopefully get the wiki-like Overviews started. I'm also pushing Stan to get in touch with some of his "inside connections" in the industry to get us some previews to list in the previews section. On a side note, the wife and I got ourselves an XBOX 360 for Christmas, last year it was our cat Zoe, this year it's a new gaming system, so while I don't have a comp right now, at least I've got something to game on :P
Free character transfers are here! (SWG)
For those of you who have SWG accounts and aren't satisfied with your current server's population, you may get the chance to move to a new home. January 13 - March 13 SOE will be offering free character transfers from selected servers (to other selected servers).
While no one at SOE is saying the M word, you can bet the customer response to the free CTS will influence their final decision on whether server mergers will be necessary.
If you choose to use the free CTS you'll receive a painting noting that you relocated, what your former name was (if it changed) and what your former Galaxy was. You'll also receive a gift box which you can give to someone on your new server. They'll be able to open it and get the same painting as you got, and noting that they welcomed you to the new server.
The current "transferred from" galaxy servers include:
- Corbantis
- Europe-Infinity
- Intrepid
- Kauri
- Kettemoor
- Lowca
- Naritus
- Scylla
- Tarquinas
- Tempest
- Valcyn
- Wanderhome
The valid destination galaxy servers include:
- Ahazi
- Bloodfin
- Bria
- Chilastra
- Eclipse
- Europe-Chimaera
- Europe-FarStar
- Flurry
- Gorath
- Radiant
- Shadowfire
- Starsider
- Sunrunner
This is almost enough to get me to resub a couple of my old accounts with SWG, go in and consolidate a few items like I always wanted to do, but never wanted to spend the money doing. I have quite a few rare items sitting on servers I never played. I'd love to move my Nightsister Armband from Lowca to Starsider. But then there's the part of me that says "You're bloody crazy, dude! Why the hell would you sub to a game you don't have an interest in anymore just to move your stuff around." I'm not sure which part will win. The anal-retentiveness or rationality. Hmmm.....
Conan and The Revamp
Well, if you follow the site at all, you'll have noticed some changes lately, I've been in the middle of a re-design, this is the 3rd iteration of the new design, I've dubbed it "Spearmint", in all, the code behind this theme is more solid, and the site is more extensible, plus, I think it looks nicer. With the new them, came a re-brand. The initial logo and site design were mostly tests for another site, I know, I'm ashamed, but this is the true face of mmOverview, so get used to it :D If I have time, I may, in the future do color variations on this theme. So keep an eye out.
I found the collector's edition of Age of Conan for cheap the other day, so I decided to give it a try, it looks interesting, and I'm looking forward to dismembering my enemies with great vengeance! The game's physics look amazing, and the combat system looks refreshing. So we'll see how that goes. Of course, I'll be playing an Assassin class, the only question now is, Aquilonian or Stygian... I'm leaning toward Stygian, because they seem more like Assassin types... but it'll boil down to customization options ultimately. I'll have a review up when I've finished the trial.
Speaking of reviews, I'm also going to be working on getting a game review system in place to allow any site user to fill out a form and generate a game review, if all goes well, the system will be highly automated, only requiring the user to add content, and the admins to approve the content. That's good news for everyone. I'll have an announcement when that's ready. Well, back to work. See you on the other side!
Vanguard: Telon Rides On!
So, Stan and I received emails in our inbox informing us that our Vanguard had been temporarily been activated on our Station Access accounts for the month of July. Stan and I were both in the Vanguard Beta Test, I participated very actively from Phase 3 of testing up until launch. Stan came in probably around Phase 4 or 5, I can't remember. The game was fun, and it was huge, and I found my love of the Rogue class really develop in that game. However, it was also very incomplete and full of bugs and memory leaks, which in some cases, made the game nigh unplayable.
It appears that years later, they're finally ready to invite the previous testers (and possibly former players) back to Telon to see what's up, and perhaps re-evaluate the game. This is the opportunity that Stan and I have been waiting for to write our reviews of Vanguard. So you can probably expect them to pop up on the site within the next few weeks.
One of my favorite things about Vanguard has always been it's expansive landscapes and stunning vistas, I'm also looking forward to getting my horse at level 10 and riding everywhere, something that is sorely needed in EQ2 (horses are more of a status symbol than a utility in EQ2).
Another interesting note is that I've heard SOE's working on a Trial "Island" that would allow them to publish a smaller trial version of the game, and finally allow for free trials. I'll certainly post when I know more about that.
Battlefield Beta!
Battlefield Heroes is beginning it's closed beta today, they've also produced a new trailer highlighting the customization system. Anyone with a keen eye will also spot that they've now apparently animated the trench coats a bit, which is cool. I've always touted simulated cloth in games, this doesn't look quite that good, but it's still welcomed. The customization looks to be top notch, allowing even small items, such as dog tags.
They haven't released details yet regarding aquiring access to the closed beta, but they have mentioned that it will be followed closely with a public open beta, that anyone can participate in. The primary goal of the closed beta is to test the updater, as well as the game's digital distrobution method. The primary goal of the open beta, will be to stress test the servers, most likely, as well as test gameplay elements. I'm very much looking forward to testing this game, and eventually playing it upon it's release.
Chugging Along
Just a small update today. I slightly re-arranged how the source for the site is generated, nothing that users will notice, but something that search engines will :D. I also adjusted some bits so the site will render properly in IE6 (not like many gamers still use IE6, but whatever, better safe than sorry.
On the Rainslick: Precipice of Darkness, Episode One, the new Penny Arcade game is coming out pretty soon, that has me pretty excited, I encourange everyone to head to Greenhouse and test their downloader for them. Rainslick is an episodic download only game that Hothead is developing with Penny Arcade, the setting is a Lovecraft meets Steampunk meets Penny Arcade. You create your own character, who's illustrated in a PA style, both in 2D and 3D. I'm looking forward to customizing my own Penny Arcade toon, which I'm told, will be usable in all future Episode. The game will initially cost $20, and be available from Greenhouse.
