SWG Server Shutdowns

Tralmek's picture

It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. It was officially (and inevitably) announced today that Star Wars Galaxies will be closing 12 of its servers on October 15, 2009. SOE officials are quick to note that this is not a precursor to the game itself shutting down, but merely to keep the server resources manageable.

Star Wars Galaxies Overview

Genre:
Science Fiction

On 16 March 2000, LucasArts Entertainment announced a partnership with Verant Interactive Inc. and Sony Online Entertainment to create the first massively multiplayer Star Wars online role-playing game. The then unnamed game would be developed by Verant with online play supported by SOE. This was the same team responsible for creating and supporting the popular EverQuest multiplayer online game. LucasArts would be responsible for all distribution of the Star Wars online game.

Free character transfers are here! (SWG)

For those of you who have SWG accounts and aren't satisfied with your current server's population, you may get the chance to move to a new home. January 13 - March 13 SOE will be offering free character transfers from selected servers (to other selected servers).

While no one at SOE is saying the M word, you can bet the customer response to the free CTS will influence their final decision on whether server mergers will be necessary.

Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) was the first MMORPG that I ever tried. The one benefit that I immediate appreciated was the fact that you did not have to be a combat class. I chose an entertainer as my primary profession, with artisan being a second choice. Over time, and many different changes and updates, the class system became similar to most MMOs-one class and you build up points within that class for different abilities. Unfortunately, in the entertainer class, this means a lot of grinding, going from song to song and dance to dance to try and level up.

Star Wars Galaxies is an excellent game. I played it for five years, serving twice as a correspondent (Entertainer and Musician) as well as my time in the Galactic Senate v1.0 and v2.0. I won't waste time explaining how extraordinary the game was in its first several months or the downfalls it took during its two major "do-overs." Though I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention them. This review is about the game as it is today.
